Best Time to Visit Naivasha: An Honest Month-by-Month Guide for 2026 and 2027

The best time to visit Naivasha is January to March, when it’s driest and sunniest, with daytime highs of about 25°C to 26°C, which is ideal for Hell’s Gate, Mount Longonot and boat rides. June to September is also dry but cooler and cloudier. April and May are the wettest months, with April averaging about 140 mm of rain over 22 days. Naivasha is a year-round destination, though, and the bigger factor for many people is crowds: Christmas, Easter and the Safari Rally (18 to 21 March 2027) are the busiest and priciest times.

This guide breaks down Naivasha’s weather month by month, what each season is good for and when to go for the best balance of weather, prices and crowds.

What is the weather like in Naivasha?

Naivasha has mild days and cold nights all year round, because it sits high in the Rift Valley at about 1,890 m above sea level. Daytime highs range from about 20°C to 26°C, and nights drop to roughly 7°C to 11°C. There are two rainy seasons: the long rains, around April and May, and the short rains, around October to December.

Jargon check: the “long rains” are Kenya’s main rainy season and the “short rains” are the lighter second season. In Naivasha, rain often comes in short afternoon or evening bursts rather than all-day downpours.

What is the best time to visit Naivasha for each activity?

Hell’s Gate and Mount Longonot: January to March

Dry trails, clear views and warm (but not scorching) days make this the best window for cycling, the gorge and the Longonot crater hike. Avoid the gorge entirely in April and May, when flash floods are a real risk after rain.

Boat rides and birdwatching: all year

The lake is good in any month. Go early in the morning, roughly 6.30 to 9 am, for calm water, whatever the season. Rain in the wet months can cut trips short, so build in some flexibility.

Crescent Island: all year, best when dry

Walking among giraffes is pleasant year-round, but dry months mean firmer paths and better light for photos.

Relaxing at your stay: June to September

The cool, dry months are perfect for fireside evenings and slow weekends. They’re less ideal for pools, since highs sit around 20°C to 22°C.

When is Naivasha busiest?

Naivasha is busiest during Christmas and New Year, Easter, long weekends and the WRC Safari Rally, which runs from 18 to 21 March 2027. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March in 2027, the weekend after the rally, so late March 2027 will be especially busy.

During these peaks, expect higher accommodation prices, matatu fares that often rise from the usual KSh 250 to 350 to KSh 500 or more, heavy traffic on the Nairobi road and crowds at boat landings. If you want to go at these times, book weeks or months ahead. Our guides to the Naivasha December holiday and Safari Rally accommodation explain how.

When is the cheapest time to visit Naivasha?

The cheapest time to visit is on ordinary weekends or weekdays outside the holidays and big events. You’ll have the widest choice of homes at standard rates, and some hosts are flexible on price for midweek stays. On Likizo, standard rates start at about KSh 2,500 a night for a town apartment (as of October 2026).

Is it worth visiting Naivasha in the rainy season?

Yes, if you’re flexible and mainly want a relaxing break, but plan around the weather if your trip depends on Hell’s Gate or Longonot. Rain in Naivasha often comes in bursts rather than all day, so a wet morning can turn into a clear afternoon.

  • The upside: greener landscapes, quieter weekends outside Easter, and more choice of homes.
  • The downside: muddy estate roads, possible gorge closures at Hell’s Gate and boat rides cut short by storms.
  • How to make it work: book a home with good indoor space or a fireplace, keep mornings free for outdoor plans and have a rainy-day backup, like a slow lunch or the geothermal spa.

What is the best time to visit Naivasha with children?

For families, the dry months from January to March work best, because outdoor activities run smoothly and the days are warmest. If you’re tied to school holidays, December can be lovely too, as long as you book early and accept peak-season crowds. Whatever the month, pack warm clothes for the evenings; children feel the cold nights quickly.

What is the best time to visit Naivasha for couples?

Couples who want peace and quiet should aim for ordinary weekends or weekdays between January and March, or in the cool, dry months from June to September. You’ll get the widest choice of lake-view homes at standard rates and quieter boat landings.
